Barbara Hulme
Portrait painter and painter of the beauty of humanity
I am a disabled artist on a mission to empower disabled people etc. to achieve representation by painting personal, sensitive portraits of them in watercolour. and help people realise that these health issues can happen to anyone through trauma, illness, accident or other reasons. My intention is to try to influence people to be more empathic and understanding and to give people with disabilities a voice.
In my series of portrait collaborations, I ask the subject to send me photographs of themselves looking and feeling good along with their stories in 400 words or less. I create the portrait from the photographs and then share portrait and stories on social media and in art galleries.
The Health Series I am working on portrays the subjects in a positive light, showing people that those of us with disabilities really are just like everyone else but are disabled by society. My collections on Mental Health, Men’s Health, Women’s Scars and All Collection Women’s Health, are in the same vein which I have been concentrating on for the past few years.
The feedback I’ve received from disabled people has been very positive. They really appreciate the fact that I do not portray them as figures of pity, or of medical interest, but as people. An approach, apparently, that is new and innovative.
